A traffic stop Thursday morning on the city’s east side led to the arrest of a Seymour man on four drug charges.

Steven Venegas, 34, faces a Level 2 felony charge of possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver; a Level 6 felony charges of possession of paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine; and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and driving while suspended.

The charges stem from a traffic stop conducted by Seymour Officer Devlin McMindes at 12:12 a.m. Thursday, police report.

That stopped occurred after Venegas changed lanes without using a turn signal in the 1500 block of East Tipton Street, Seymour Police Capt. Carl Lamb said.

McMindes discovered Venegas had a suspended driver’s license, and he did not own the 2002 Lincoln he was driving, Lamb said.

Lamb said McMindes also noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

While the vehicle was being impounded, officers discovered approximately 46 grams of methamphetamine, 27 grams of marijuana and digital scales, Lamb said.

A passenger was not arrested because police determined she had no knowledge of drugs in the vehicle, he said.

Lamb said the stop occurred during the latest Operation Pullover Blitz, which focused on dangerous driving and traffic offenses including seat belt and turn signal violations and impaired driving. Officers working these overtime traffic safety details are paid with a grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

The department is required to conduct four events per year, Lamb said.

This portion of Operation Pullover began March 2 and will end March 25.

Venegas was being held without bond Thursday at the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown pending his initial court hearing.

A Level 2 felony is punishable by anywhere from 10 and 30 years in prison upon conviction.
