Pirates top Owls
GREENSBURG
Greensburg opened up a 9-0 lead after 3.5 minutes of play, extended its lead to 19-4 at the end of the first period, and went on to a 69-52 win against Seymour on Tuesday night.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by the Owls.
“They did a nice job on us defensively,” Owls coach Tyler Phillips said. “They’ve got weapons like crazy.”
The Pirates made 24 of 39 shots from the floor to 18-for-45 for the Owls.
A 3-point basket by Lane Sparks gave the home team a 9-0 lead before Tiller Cummings made two free throws with 4:15 left in the first period for the Owls’ first points.
Greensburg increased its lead to 17-2 before Jack Roberts made a layup with one minute left in the first period. The Owls shot 1-for-12 from the floor in the first period.
The Pirates scored the first two baskets of the second period before Max Otte made a 3-pointer for the Owls. The Pirates shot 15-for-22 to the Owls’ 6-for-22 shooting in the first half.
After the Pirates scored the first basket of the second half, the Owls went on a 7-0 run with Ty McCory’s layup cutting the Owls’ deficit to 40-24.
Otte hit his second 3-pointer of the night to leave the Owls down 46-30 before the Pirates took a 48-32 lead into the fourth period.
The closest the Owls (10-9) could get in the fourth period was 60-46 on a layup by Cummings with 3:01 remaining.
Cummings topped the Owls with 17 points and 6 rebounds, and McCory added 12 points.
The Pirates (16-5) were led by Andrew Welage with 21 points, Drew Comer scored 16, Mason McCleod 12 and Lane Sparks 11.
The Owls will be home to Austin on Friday for senior night.
Braves fall to Highlanders

Floyd Central showed why it is ranked fourth in the state in Class 4A, as it outscored Brownstown Central in each period to record a 63-27 win Tuesday night.
The Braves trailed 17-10 after the first period before the highlanders outscored the Braves 20-4 in the second period for a 37-14 lead at the half. The hosts outscored the Braves 14-7 in the third period.
Mike Boshears and Seth Borden were high scores for the Braves with seven points each.
The Braves (14-6) will travel to Eastern (Pekin) on Friday for a Mid-Southern Conference game, and will be home to Providence Saturday night.
The Highlanders (19-1) were led in scoring by Matt Weimer and Collin Braswell with 12 points each.
