Helping Haiti
Thumbs-up to the 24 volunteers from local Lutheran churches who recently spent time helping build a church in Village Coracess, and a related thumbs-up to everyone who contributes funds to Heart-4-Haiti, a missionary organization started at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vallonia. The ministry, now supported by Lutheran churches in Jackson County, has constructed a school in Haiti and supports schools and congregations associated with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Port-au-Prince and Leogane.
Leading the way
Thumbs-up to Trinity Lutheran High School sophomore Rachel Sabotin for finishing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday at the state swimming meet at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Sabotin also finished 10th in the 200-yard freestyle to rack up 22 points for Trinity, which finished 21st as a team.
Record-setting
Thumbs-up to the Trinity Lutheran High School girls basketball team, which finished the season with a school-record 22 wins, a sectional championship and the program’s first regional win. Members of the team include Piper Acton, Maddie Bell, Lauren Fleetwood, Emma Goecker, Jodi Goecker, Abby Hackman, Savannah Harweger, Sydney Jaynes, Emilee Lang, Delaney Maschino, Genesis Munoz, Hannah Sabotin and Savanna Setty. The Cougars are coached by Mike Lang.
Dominating
Thumbs-up to the Seymour High School gymnastics team, which continued its dominant season Saturday by winning the Bloomington North Invitational. Members of the squad, which also recently won the Bloomington South Invitational, are Jailyn Aynes, Ivy Brown, Allie DeHart, Avery DeHart, Nicole Elmore, Grace Furlow, Brett Kleber, Larssyn Maisel, Shelby Scott and Kellsye Warner. The Owls are coached by Angie Mellencamp and Liz Copeland.
Winning the challenge
Thumbs-up to Sophie Kries and Sarah Rollins, who recently won the seventh annual Maverick Challenge high school business planning competition. The two Brownstown Central High School seniors took top honors for their plan to start a business making jumpsuits and rompers.
