Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Volunteer, get tax assistance on holiday

Jackson County United Way is offering an opportunity for people to volunteer Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

People are needed to canvass areas of the county from 1 to 3 p.m. to increase awareness of On My Way Pre-K and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

“We will be hanging door hangers with information on both programs on this day of service,” said Bonita Dobbs, program manager for Jackson County United Way. “Both programs are so important to families in our community that are hardworking but barely getting by.”

Dobbs said instead of taking a day off, people should find ways to honor King through community service and giving back.

“Join others in answering the call to action and make it a day on not a day off,” she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering may call Dobbs at 812-522-5450 or email [email protected].

Seymour attorney Mark Risser said he will be answering legal questions free of charge Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

His office at 1411 Corporate Way will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. People can call 812-522-0629 to make an appointment or can stop in any time that day.

Risser said he has offered his knowledge and expertise free on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for many years as a service to the community.

It’s important for people to receive the right answers to their legal questions, he said.

“There is a tremendous need for accurate information,” he said. “Many people ask their friends and neighbors for advice. These folks many times either don’t recall the exact law or have a different situation that they try to apply to others. They are well-intentioned, of course, but frequently wrong.”

There also are many scams out there people need to be aware of when seeking legal advice, he said.

“I hate seeing folks get caught up in financial traps,” he said. “So many people, for whatever reason, maybe just too trusting, don’t want to stand up to bullies and their scamming, lying ways.”

Risser said he likes being able to help people in need.

“I can do a nice thing for people, and it really costs me nothing but a little time,” he said. “It creates good relations and good karma.”
