Thumbs-Up, Thumbs-Down – September 1

Fun-raising

Thumbs-up to everyone who attended one of the many events this past weekend in Seymour, including the sixth annual Scoop the Loop, Seymour Noon Lions Club’s seventh annual Pig in the Park, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108’s second Pre-Scoop Cruise-in and Car Show, Redeemer Lutheran Church’s seventh annual Cruise with the Son Car Show and the 15th annual Dogs Days Dog Show, sponsored by the Humane Society of Jackson County. Besides providing some fun — and a lot of work for organizers — most of those events raise money to help make the lives of everyone living in the community a little better. The events also bring former residents back to the city for a day — similar to Oktoberfest.

Overdose awareness

Thumbs-up to everyone who attended the International Overdose Awareness Day event Thursday evening at One Chamber Square in downtown Seymour. Officially, drug overdoses have taken the lives of 13 people in Jackson County so far this year. That’s 13 mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, children, brothers, sisters and other loved ones who have died from drug use. The event included a candlelight vigil and an awareness walk, which served as a fundraiser for Overdose Lifeline. Overdose Lifeline provides free naloxone opioid reversal kits to emergency responders and the public.

Toymakers

Thumbs-up to Ruel West of Seymour, who is a member of the Central Indiana Woodworkers group. The club meets monthly in the Indianapolis area to share its interest in woodworking. The club plans to donate 70 toys to Margaret R. Brown Elementary School for each of the nine-week grading periods to give to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, who exhibit good behavior, make good grades and are good friends to each other. A related thumbs-up to the Seymour Evening Lions Club for donating $300 for the purchase of supplies for the project. West also is a member of the Lions Club.

Clear sidewalks

Thumbs-down to those who use public sidewalks for their own purposes, which requires people who want to use the sidewalks for walking to walk in the street.

Abandoned

Thumbs-down to those who decide to get rid of unwanted vehicles by abandoning them in parking lots or along streets.

Stopped

Thumbs-down to motorists who believe a stop sign means you can roll up and then blow on through the intersection without coming to a complete stop.
