Local mom organizing family rock painting, find event

Somewhere between Pokemon Go! and geocaching is how a young Seymour mom describes an upcoming event she is organizing for local families.

After hearing about a group in northeast Ohio that paints and hides rocks for people to find, Chelsie York decided it sounded like it would be fun to do here.

Being a young mother and avid crafter, York always is on the lookout for activities she can do with her son that don’t require a television or video game system.

As an employee of Developmental Services Inc., she also likes to find arts and crafts projects she can do with adult clients who have developmental disabilities.

That’s why she has created the Southern Indiana Rocks! group.

“The whole idea is to encourage creativity and family togetherness,” York said.

A kickoff event, “Paint in the Park,” will be at 10 a.m. May 6 at Shields Park in Seymour. All supplies, including rocks and paint, will be provided for children and adults to decorate rocks that they will hide in public places in the community, such as parks and trails, for other people to find.

“This way, we can get a lot of rocks out there,” York said.

Rocks should be decorated with positive or family-friendly messages and should not be political or offensive in nature, she said.

Each rock will have a tag affixed to it directing the finder to the Southern Indiana Rocks! Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/soinrocks. People can record information about where and when they found the rock and upload pictures. People also can post clues to where their rocks are hidden.

The activity encourages people to get outside and explore their community as a family, and it’s designed for all ages and abilities, York said.

“This is simply to add a little fun in a busy, crazy world,” she said.

York has set up a fundraising page at gofundme.com/paintinthepark to raise money to purchase materials for the event.

She also is accepting donations of items, including acrylic paints of all colors, spray sealer, Modge Podge, stones, paintbrushes, paper plates, baby wipes, plastic cups and plastic table cloths.
