The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the new classifications for IHSAA member schools in six team sports for the next two school years Thursday.

Changes will effect future sectional assignments.

Numerous Jackson County schools will see changes in the upcoming years.

The Seymour football team will bump from Class 4A to Class 5A.

The Owls (listed enrollment 1,498 students) will be the fourth smallest school in Class 5A of 37 teams.

There are six classes in football total.

“We are excited about the opportunity to compete at one of the highest levels of football in this state for the tournament,” Owls coach Josh Shattuck said. “We feel that our current nine-game regular season schedule prepares us for that, as we play multiple 5A and 6A schools along with a powerhouse 3A school in Brownstown Central.”

Boys and girls soccer will change to a three class system starting next school year. Seymour will play in Class 3A while Trinity Lutheran stays in Class A.

In girls basketball, North Harrison will move up to Class 4A from Class 3A due to tournament success factor. Brownstown Central played in the same sectional as the Cougars in years past.

In volleyball, Christian Academy moves to Class 2A while Providence bumps to 4A also from success factors.

Providence previously played in the same sectional as Brownstown Central, and CAI has squared off with Trinity Lutheran in the regional three consecutive years.

The classifications for baseball and softball will be released in the coming days.
