Mental illness family support group plans meeting

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is starting a new family support group in Seymour for family members or a close friend of someone who has a mental illness.

NAMI of South Central Indiana will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The first meeting is set for Wednesday in the small half-room at the Jackson County Public Library, 303 W. Second St., Seymour.

This free confidential group is not for the mentally ill person. It is to support the family. By supporting the family, the group will indirectly support the person with the mental health diagnosis, according to a news release from NAMI certified family support group facilitators Carol Oktavec and Sonja Scott.

NAMI offers additional educational and support groups for both the consumer/patient and the family members. The local group hopes to bring some of these other programs to Seymour in the near future.
