On the floor, Cody Waskom likes to do it all for the Brownstown Central boys basketball team.
However, when he gets the opening, he will always shoot his shot.
“I like to shoot, step out a little bit,” Waskom said. “I just enjoy the sport in general. I think its fun. We play good competition and we get exercise and stuff like that.”
Waskom said he began playing basketball in third grade at St. John’s Sauers and has been dribbling and shooting ever since.
He moved into the Braves’ starting line up midway through last season and has been a key contributor to their success since.
The senior is confident shooting a 3-point shot from anywhere outside the circle.
He said in most situations he would rather face a man-to-man defense instead of a zone.
Waskom has scored 20 or more points 10 times this season with a high of 33 against Austin. He also scored 30 against both Brown County and Evansville Reitz.
He was in the 20s four times his junior season with a high of 23 against Austin.
The Braves beat Reitz 106-104 in four overtimes in the first round of the Graber Buildings Holiday Tournament at North Daviess. He said the win over Reitz is his favorite career victory.
“That was fun,” Waskom said “There was a lot of competition down there.”
He said he likes to play up-tempo with fast breaking and full-court defense.
When the Braves press, “I’m anywhere from on the ball to the second line, and sometimes I’m all the way back. It just depends on what press we’re in,” Waskom said.
Waskom likes to plan in a man or 1-2-2 press on the defensive end.
He said he enjoys playing in front of large crowds at home.
“It’s fun, a good atmosphere,” Waskom said of the pit. “A lot of people come out and watch us. It gets your adrenaline going.
He said it will take teamwork to continue to keep winning.
“We’re going to need teamwork, communication, and make sure we get stops on the defensive end, and obviously we’ve got to put the ball in the hole,” he said. “Practice is pretty important because they always say you practice like you play.
“Communication is very important. If you don’t communicate you can get switched up on your guy and that can result in a wide open layup.”
Waskom also said staying positive is a key on the court.
“You definitely need to have a good attitude going into it,” Waskom said. “I think that’s a pretty big part of it as well.”
The Braves are currently ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
“It means a lot to be ranked that high,” Waskom said. “We want to keep winning so we can stay up that high.”
