Two teenage sisters were injured in a wreck on U.S. 50 in front of Sonic Drive-In on Thursday afternoon.

Bailey Lewis, 16, of Seymour was lifelined to Riley Hospital for Children IU Health in Indianapolis after sustaining a broken left arm, a broken bone in her neck, a concussion and several lacerations, her mother, Michelle Lewis, said Friday.

“She has a cast and a neck brace for several weeks but should make a full recovery,” Michelle Lewis said. “She hopes to be moved out of intensive care and into a regular room today (Friday).”

Mariah Lewis, 18, was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for facial cuts and three broken vertebrae in her lower back.

“She is being evaluated for any other injuries and to see if the breakage requires surgery,” Michelle Lewis said.

Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott said Bailey Lewis was driving a silver Mazda Miata and was exiting the drive-thru of Sonic onto the highway when she pulled into the path of Victor Hernandez Duran, 43, of Seymour.

Hernandez Duran was on his way home from work, driving a blue Chevrolet Venture minivan east on U.S. 50.

He did not go to the hospital for medical treatment.

His daughter, Alondra Hernandez, said he was shook up by the wreck but was more concerned about the Lewises.

The wreck was reported at 3:47 p.m., police said.

Abbott said he wasn’t sure which direction the Miata was going because after the collision, it was forced back into Sonic’s lot, where it struck a picnic table and then a tree located between Sonic and a used car lot to the west.

Officers Bernard Petro, Seth Sage and Bart Bevers responded to the scene.

Abbott said U.S. 50 did not have to be shut down for any extended period of time because officers were able to direct traffic around the wreck.

Michelle Lewis said she and her family were thankful for all of the calls, texts and Facebook messages.

“The support from family, friends and the community has been more than we could imagine, and we feel beyond blessed,” she said.
