Owls take down Rebels

While every other high school sporting was cancelled inside Jackson County, the Seymour golf team wouldn’t let a storm stop its first dual meet of the season.

The Owls picked up their victory at Shadowood Golf Course by a margin of 169 to 214 against visiting Southwestern (Hanover) on Tuesday.

The golfers took the links and completed nearly three holes before thunder and a downpour halted play for nearly an hour.

Following the halt, the Owls geared up to take on the drenched, soggy course in the rain.

Junior Brady Marshall and freshman Keaton Simpson led the Owls with scores of 38 (2 over) and 40 (4 over).

Marshall birdied on hole 18 and Simpson managed birdies on 11 and 18.

“Brady started off with a double bogey and finished strong,” Owls coach Jim Hoffman said. “He played solid golf up and down. It’s like what we talked about Saturday (at the Seymour Invitational), getting up and down on the green — and that’s what he did.”

Ethan Ashley, a senior, came in next for the Owls shooting a 45, and freshman Tyler Bullard finished close behind at 46.

Hoffman said that his young squad is progressing nicely early in the season, and that his young group is heading in the right direction.

Owls junior Brady Rinehart rounded-out the squad’s scoring on the evening with a 47.

“We battled, again, against spring weather,” Hoffman said. “I’m really happy with the scores. The 160-range is our goal, and we’re getting better and better. Ethan and Tyler both cut it down two or three strokes. Keaton had one hole that didn’t go very well, otherwise he would have around three less.”

Coming off their first meet, and tournament of the season this past Saturday at Shadwood, the Owls looked composed on the course in their first 9-hole competition on the year.

“I saw a little more confidence, and a little less jitters,” Hoffman said. “You can see the confidence starting to build. We’ve knocked-off several strokes already in just a few days.”

On Saturday, the Owls will return to tournament play at Valley View in Floyds Knobs.
