SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Margaret W. Rapp Simmons, 97, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, in Seattle, Washington.

Born June 19, 1918, she was the eldest child of John C. and Christine Lebline Rapp of Rockford.

A 1935 graduate of Shields High School, she attended Indiana University and Indiana State University. After obtaining her elementary teaching license, she worked at Kasting School in 1937-38, and she taught reading and writing to troops at Camp Atterbury during World War II.

She married Robert “Bob” L. Simmons of Brownstown in 1941, and they lived in Terre Haute until 1965. They then moved to New York and later to New Jersey, where she lived until 2015. Her final year was spent living near her granddaughters in Seattle. Margaret taught elementary school for many years in Terre Haute and Wyckoff, New Jersey.

Survivors include her son, Dr. Steve Robert Simmons of St. Paul, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Simmons of St. Paul; and granddaughters, Jill E. Simmons of Seattle, Lara R. Simmons of Wellington, New Zealand, and Dawn C. Simmons of Seattle; and two great-grandchildren, both of Seattle.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her younger son, Dr. Philip J. Simmons, who had lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and siblings, Ingleby Rapp Mitchell, who had lived in Tucson, Arizona, Julia Rapp Hobson, who had lived in Bossier City, Louisiana, and John Rapp, who had lived in Leesburg, Virginia.

A graveside observance and interment will be at 3 p.m. June 11 at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.
