Have a booming good time Saturday

Looking for a fun-filled holiday that won’t blast your budget?

The Seymour Parks and Recreation Department has an answer. It has planned an Independence Day concert and fireworks show, and both are free.

The annual Music in the Park event will take place beginning at noon Saturday at the Shields Park bandstand. Local musician Brilyn Terrell will perform from noon to 1 p.m., the Long Family Singers will perform from 1 to 2 p.m., and These Fine Gentlemen will play from 2 to 3 p.m.

The concert is organized by This Old Guitar Music Store.

People can bring picnic meals, lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the afternoon, parks director Brent Jameson said. Alcoholic beverages, however, are not permitted on city property, and personal fireworks are discouraged.

From noon to 5 p.m., people can enjoy half-price admission at the Shields Park Pool.

Then, at 10 p.m., weather permitting, the annual fireworks display will light up the sky over Freeman Field Sports Complex. The 30- to 45-minute show is funded by Kremers Urban Pharmaceuticals and is synchronized to music broadcast on WJAA-FM (96.3).

The fireworks are seen by thousands of people who fill the park, park along State Road 11 and near the airport, or set up chairs in yards of friends and family who live in the area.

Jameson said he’s looking forward to seeing his first Seymour fireworks display with his family. Last year, he missed the event due to the birth of his son.

“So many people have told me what a big deal it is,” he said of the show. “I can’t wait to see it for myself.”

The concert and fireworks are a great way to spend the holiday, he added.

“It gives people a chance to gather with their families to celebrate Independence Day,” he said.

Jameson said the entertainment is a community service the city provides at no cost to residents.

“It’s a tradition, and we plan to continue to do it,” he said. “Everyone enjoys it. It should be fun to watch.”
