A Crothersville woman was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 22, charges stemming from an investigation into a bank being defrauded of about $80,000, police report.

Kayla Applegate, 33, was arrested for theft and fraud, both Level 5 felonies, and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday. She was being held without bond Wednesday pending her initial hearing in Jackson Circuit Court.

Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer said the investigation started when the department received information from The Peoples Bank of possible fraud/theft by former employee on Sept. 10 of the Brownstown-based firm.

Meyer said he and Detective Jesse Hutchinson met with officials with The Peoples Bank and were advised Applegate had access to the credit card system while working for the bank.

The investigation shows Applegate opened an unauthorized credit card in December 2023. In February, another credit card was opened.

A Level 5 felony carries a potential prison term of one to six years and a $10,000 fine.
