Schneck Medical Center is proactively rescheduling a number of non-emergency surgeries due to a nationwide shortage of IV fluids affecting hospitals across the country, according to a news release issued Monday afternoon.

The hospital also is working closely with its suppliers to address the issue and minimize the impact on patient care.

“This decision was made with the safety and well-being of our patients as our top priority,” said Dr. Eric Fish, who is president/CEO of Schneck. “While the IV fluid shortage is a national issue, we are taking every step to ensure that emergency procedures remain unaffected and that patients impacted by this rescheduling are given the earliest possible new dates.”

IV fluids are essential for a wide range of medical procedures, including surgeries. The current supply disruption has forced healthcare providers to reassess their stock levels and prioritize critical care situations. Schneck has implemented a robust conservation plan to ensure optimal use of existing supplies while exploring alternative sourcing options.

Affected patients have been notified directly. Patients whose surgeries are being rescheduled can expect personal follow-up calls to confirm new dates as soon as possible.
