COLUMBUS — The Seymour team and the Brownstown Central doubles duo of Lane Steward and Pierson Wheeler advanced in the IHSAA tournament series at Columbus North on Tuesday.

Seymour defeated Scottsburg 3-2 and will face powerful Columbus North at 5 p.m. today for the regional championship.

Steward and Wheeler defeated Brooks Swank and Xander Richie of Austin 6-0, 6-3 in individual sectional action and will play Grant Goldsmith and Jack Freeland of Oldenburg at 5 p.m. today at Columbus.

Jack Stuckwisch of Trinity Lutheran lost 6-1, 6-1 to Parker Bales of Jennings County.

Seymour coach PJ Stein said beating Scottsburg took a good team effort.

“We weren’t sure what to expect,” Stein said. “They had a couple new players since we played them the last time. Their No. 2 singles is one of the best players I’ve seen all year. We had a good win today.”

Erwin LeLannic is an exchange student from France. He joined the Scottsburg team at mid-season and defeated Carter Stein 6-1, 6-1.

Winning points for the Owls were Parker Thompson at one singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jonah Copple, Dane Thompson at three singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jarwin Luttrell, and the one doubles team of Joel Stevens and Shun Takeuchi with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Noah Bagwell and Garrett McClellan.

Parker spoke about his performance afterwards.

“I was just consistent,” Thompson said. “He really couldn’t really keep it in, so I kept it in.”

He said his ankle is getting better every day.

“I am definitely moving forward and backwards better now,” he said. “We had a good win today. North will be a little tougher for sure.”

Dane Thompson turned 15 on Tuesday, and he said the win was a good way for him to spend the day.

“I just figured out that (Luttrell) wasn’t that consistent a player so I just made him make the mistakes and kept getting points.

“It was a nice birthday present. I’ll need to play my best against Columbus.”

Stevens spoke about the win with his partner Takeuchi.

“We were both on it today,” Stevens said. “We both knew what we had to do. We knew they had a lot of changes to their team, so we knew we had to play good tennis, and we did.”

“In the first set I figured out where I needed to place my serve for them to have a rough return, and we tried to capitalize on that every time.”

He is looking forward to facing Columbus North today.

“We went three sets with them last time. We had a third-set tiebreak and lost to them 7-10. If we play like we did tonight we have a good chance.”

Scottsburg’s Jack Luttrell and Sam Craig beat Braylon Busby and Xavier DeBois 7-6, 6-4.

Dane Thompson scored the deciding point to put Seymour win the win column.

“Dane played one of his best matches of the season,” Coach Stein said.

Wheeler and Steward raised their season record to 19-0 with their win.

Wheeler spoke on the teamwork the duo showed.

“We were just working together and getting to every ball and played the way we always play as teammates and power through our game,” Wheeler said.

Steward added on the performance.

“We were just putting balls where they needed to go,” Steward said. “We didn’t hit them right to them. The second set we had a problem with that the first few games, and then we finally worked together, and it worked out well.”

Braves Coach Donnie Thomas said, “I told Pierson that I told his dad when you were down 3-0 that it is going to be 6-3 when they get done. Once they dig a hole, they like to dig out of it because there are lots of people that dig a hole and stay there.

“We had some shady calls there at first and everybody got a little hot, but it calmed down after that. That’s the way it should have been.

“They like playing the baseline together and they get about 90 percent of the balls back when they put and overhead back. We do lay it up at the net quite a little bit, but basically somebody will go to the net and finish the point off.

“We hit the ball more times than we need to. You want to serve, return and put it away, but we hit it 6-7 times sometimes.”

Trinity coach Brad Emerson said Stuckwisch gave a good effort.

“It was a good match. One and one doesn’t really reflect how close that match was. In that first set, every game was deuce. Jack had opportunities and couldn’t close and instead of 6-1 it could have easily been a 6-4, 6-3 first set.

“In the second set I think Jack was just leaving a few too many balls short. The Bales kid has a good forehand and was able to tee off a little bit more on it, and the more confident he got, the better he was playing.”

Stuckwisch finished the season 17-4.

“Jack had a good season. I’m proud of him,” Emerson said. “He has one more year and he’s willing to put in the work and play more tournaments and do a lot more clinics, so once he develops a few more weapons, volleys and a bigger forehand, then he’ll be ready to rock-and-roll next year.”
