Blue Star Memorial Highway marker dedication upcoming

The All Thumbs Garden Club of Seymour will be hosting a Blue Star Memorial dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Crossroads Park, 101 E. Tipton St., Seymour.

The memorial is to honor the military who have served, are serving or will serve this land Americans call home. It is sponsored by the Southeast District Garden Club of Indiana Inc.

The marker was first erected on Sept. 11, 1979, in cooperation with the Indiana State Highway Commission and by the 30 clubs in the Southeast District Garden Club in 1979. It was placed near the entrance to Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge entrance and designated U.S. 50 between Seymour and North Vernon a Blue Star Memorial Highway.

Over time, the original location of the marker needed desperate care and relocation due to the dangers of maintaining the marker during increased traffic hours and difficult terrain, according to a news release from the All Thumbs Garden Club.

All Thumbs Garden Club members, Jeanne Morris, Nancy Fleming and Bridget Molinari worked with TGCI Blue Star Director Chris Seal through the process of restoration and relocation.

The marker is now established at Crossroads Community Park in downtown Seymour where U.S. 50 crosses over the railways.

Donors such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 and the American Legion Post 89 made significant contributions to the marker’s restoration.

SE District, led by Director Diane Hurless, guided the club through the process of requesting monies through civic funding.

The remaining funds were used to plant various flowers around the marker from every garden club in the Southeast District.

Logistical support from the Indiana Department of Transportation, Seymour Public Works and Seymour Parks and Recreation also helped make the restoration possible.
