Serving the overlooked

Jackson County Mental Health Association targets a part of the population that’s often just overlooked, Directors Peg Lockman contends.

“We have a social club where the mentally retarded can get out and meet once a month,” Lockman said.

Members of that club, who may still live at home or may be out on their own, have cookouts, eat out at local restaurants and sometimes go to a movie.

“They’re not often asked to do those kinds of things,” Lockman said.

But the association is much more than a social club for the mentally ill and mentally handicapped.
