The Brownstown Central tennis team won No 2. and No. 3 singles and both doubles in straight sets to defeat Jennings County 4-1 on Thursday in the Seymour Sectional.

The win advances the Braves to the championship match against Seymour at 4:45 p.m. today.

Braves Coach Donnie Thomas spoke after Thursday’s winning effort.

“They figured things out on the court. Two doubles were having a little bit of trouble to start with,” he said. “Then they started dinking it a little short, making them move because they were playing deep and weren’t real quick getting to the net so that hurt Jennings County for a little bit. It was close after that, and we played really well.”

The coach spoke about the play from his singles players.

“Jace (Reaser) played good there at three, and Chase (Brock) played the best match he has played serving and everything,” Thomas said. “He just made good choices. All the boys made good choices tonight.”

“Smith (Hackman) was down 5-0 in the second set and picked up two games there. He was right in there in every game. He just didn’t pick up the big points and I told him every time he made a good shot, Parker Bales) made a better shot. He’s a good player. He made some really good shots.”

Brock topped Ty Zohrlaut 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Reaser was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Lucius Stidham at No. 3 singles. Bales beat Hackman 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

The Braves Pierson Wheeler and Lane Steward won 6-0, 6-3 over Charles Skinner and Luke Napier at No. 1 doubles, and Max peters and Brady Davis topped Brady Sentz and Asher Morin at No. 2 doubles.

Thomas said, “One doubles played well again and two doubles did a good job.”

Brock spoke about the win afterwards.

“The win feels good. I’m happy the team got the win, and we get to go on and play Seymour,” Brock said. “Everything was clicking today. I was able to move him around a lot. I was getting my serve in consistently.”

“We’re going to have to keep our heads up (against Seymour) and fight every match,” Brock said. “If we get down, just come back and scratch back.”

The Braves lost to the Owls 4-1 on Aug. 24 at Seymour.
