Mary Margaret Curry Newkirk, age 73, of Greenwood, passed from this life unexpectedly Monday, September 30, 2024 while at home.

Mary was born September 26, 1951, in Adair County, Kentucky, the daughter of James W. and Birddi Louise Giles Curry. On December 1, 2000, she married Jack L. Newkirk.

Mrs. Newkirk worked as a bank teller for much of her working career and she also worked for Cummins Engine Company. After retirement, she was able to travel and enjoyed taking cruise trips with Jack to Alaska and Hawaii, just to name a few destinations. Mary looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and she did that as often as possible. Going out to different restaurants and trying new dishes was something that Mary looked forward to also. When there was quiet downtime, reading a good book was relaxing for Mary. She will be deeply missed by those that know and love her.

Survivors include her children, Patricia (Jeff) Hawks of Greenwood, Matthew (Trang) Ozbun of Harvest, Alabama, Aaron Ozbun of Columbus; five granddaughters; four grandsons; step-children, Mary (grant) Perry of Seymour, Ronnie (Lisa) Elkins of Chicago, Illinois, Lisa Newkirk of Valonia, Kim Newkirk, David Newkirk, both of Seymour, Tim Newkirk of Brownstown; sisters, Donna (Keith) Growe, also of Columbus, Vicki (Mark Aydt) of Decatur, Illinois and Gail Stockon of Lincoln, Illinois; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Judy Miller, Stella Adams, Shirley Hagan; brothers, Johnny Curry and James Curry.

The funeral for Mary will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Scott Bourland officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. until the start of the service Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery in section 83.

Memorial contributions may be mad to the American Diabetes Association.
