James E. Edwards Sr., 81, passed away at home Sunday, September 22, 2024, with his loving family at his side. He was born in Brownstown, Indiana on November 2, 1942, to the late Harley and Dorothy (Houshour) Edwards.

A devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend, James was married for 60 years to his late wife, Patty. He was a plumber for 55 years, retiring from Pipe Trades Local 136, and proudly put himself through night school. He also applied his talents to repairing engines and woodworking. He was very active in the Spraytown Free Methodist Church, where he served many roles. James enjoyed playing and coaching softball, fishing, camping, and hunting for squirrels, rabbits, and deer. He was a local horseshoe champion and an excellent bowler who could easily bowl a 300. He will also be remembered as an avid NASCAR and IU basketball fan. More than anything, James will be remembered as a solid man who dearly loved and took care of his family and his church.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his children, James E. Edwards Jr., Anthony R. (Dawn) Edwards, Gregory A. (Scott) Edwards, and Cindi (Greg) Edwards; many grandchildren; several great grandchildren; brothers, William “Dean” (Ada) Edwards, Robert “Bobby” Edwards, Floyd (Kathy) Edwards, and Steve (Joan) Edwards; and several nieces and nephews. He is also dearly missed by his devoted and beloved schnauzer dog, Sport Allen.

James is preceded in death by his loving wife, Patty (Blankenship) Edwards; his parents, listed above; his son, Timothy “Timmy” Edwards; sisters, Marjorie “Marge” Edwards Cooley, Mildred “Midge” Edwards Fields, Mozena Edwards Hicks Geyman, Evelyn Edwards Sims, and Vella Mae Edwards Donnell; and brothers, Herbert “Marshall” Leroy Edwards, Ronald Edwards, and Larry Edwards.

Funeral services for James will be held Friday, September 27, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Voss and Sons Funeral Home, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour. Pastor Jerry Van Kuiken of Spraytown Free Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. James will be laid to rest in Brownstown Fairview Cemetery immediately following.
