Owls looking for first HHC win against BNL in Week 5

It has not been exactly what the Seymour football program had hoped for heading into the fifth week of the regular season, currently sitting at 1-3 after losing three straight games.

It doesn’t matter what the record says at the end of the day, because there is still plenty of football to be played before we put a bow on this season.

Another Hoosier Hills Conference matchup is lined up for the Owls in Week 5, traveling to Bedford North Lawrence, who is winless on the season. The Stars have been outscored 150 to 31 in their four games this season.

It has been a back-and-forth battle with BNL according to Seymour Head Coach Tyson Moore.

“They lost a bulk of their starters from last season, they still have some key players on defense that returned this season,” Moore said. “Historically we have been even since I arrived here. Every other year we are trading wins and losses, and it is always going to be a dogfight. We have had some great games with them over the years.”

Since Moore took over as Head Coach in 2020, Seymour and Bedford have split the four-game series 2-2, including last season where the Stars defeated the Owls 36-28.

Stars Head Coach Derrick Barker is a defensive specialist according to Moore, who has high praise for the BNL program.

“They are well-coached and a tough opponent,” Moore said. “It’s going to take a really good week of practice and preparation to come out with a victory on Friday.”

Both teams are hungry and are looking to get back into the win column. Coach Moore spoke on some keys for the Owls grabbing their first HHC win of the season.

“We have to be able to take care of the football and cannot give them more opportunities than they earn,” Moore said. “We’ve got to be able to execute, we had some miscommunications last week that hurt us.”

Stopping the run and tough defense on Friday will help the Owls according to Moore.

“We need to stop the run as well. If we struggle like we did on Friday, it could be a long night. We have to play hard-nosed defense and create turnovers.”

The Stars have been a heavy pass offense to this point, throwing 96 passing attempts through 4 games and running the ball 46 times.

Sophomore running back Brody Horton leads the team in rushing, picking up 86 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns for Bedford.

Four of their receivers have crossed the 100-yard mark on the season for the Stars. Bedford is coming off a 22-12 loss to conference opponent New Albany.

Seymour QB Mikey Wright has passed for over 500 yards this season, throwing for five touchdowns during this season.

Wideout Jaylan Johnson is leading the team in receiving with 19 catches, after hauling in 5 passes last week for 90 yards and scoring a touchdown against Floyd Central. The senior also had an interception on defense for the Owls.

Coach Moore found some positives from the team leading into this upcoming matchup from the loss to Floyd Central last week.

“I thought we ran the ball a lot better, and it was the best performance from our offensive line all season,” Moore said. “Hopefully we can turn it into a stretch of good play from them and keep it going this Friday.”

Regardless, one of these teams is going to get their first Hoosier Hills Conference win in Bedford on Friday night.
