Layla Jones scored a goal and assisted on two others to help the Trinity Lady Cougars defeat Scottsburg 4-1 at home Monday afternoon.

The Cougars held a 2-0 lead at the half as Keren Lewis scored at 3:47, and Anyah Carrigan found the back of the net at 2:25 as Jones assisted on both goals.

Trinity Head Coach Emily Terrell spoke after the win on Monday.

“They came out with a bunch of energy, which I’m really proud of,” Terrell said. “Their intensity was good from the start, and I’m just really proud that they didn’t back off, they didn’t get comfortable, they kept playing aggressive no matter the lead, and just kept pushing.”

Jones scored an unassisted goal with 2:45 left in the second half, and Bailey Reimer made it 4-0 with 21:43 remaining.

The Cougars attempted 21 shots, and Trinity goalie Hannah Helt had eight saves. Jones spoke about her goal.

“On my score today, I dribbled around a couple defenders,” Jones said. “I received the ball from Keren, and I went around the side shot as hard as I could.”

Jones has been playing soccer for the Cougars since her freshmen year.

“I’m center mid, and my responsibility is to either receive the ball and send it up the field or see if there is an opening and I can dribble through and make a shot or pass through to someone else and see if they can make a shot.”

She said for the Cougars to keep winning, “we need to stick together and definitely have teamwork. Anyah is the other center mid, and she helps me a lot. I enjoy all of the people, all of my friends. It’s all about teamwork, it’s not about one person.”

Kiera Wynn avoided a shutout for the Warriorettes with a score at 16:49.

Terrell said, “We’re working on controlling the ball from the first touch and that’s helped us so much later in the season. Getting a touch on the ball, and then being able to push forward and shoot is helping our shooters a lot and to be able to score better.

“Our defense was really solid tonight. We’ve had a few injuries and are happy to have Rowan Sharp back on our defensive line. She comes with a lot of energy, she never stops. It’s good to have her back, and her energy brings up the energy of the whole defensive line.”

The Cougars took a record of 2-6-1 to Shawe Memorial Tuesday afternoon.
