Highlanders explode in second half to down Owls 50-29

Bulleit Stadium had no shortage of attendance Friday evening for the homecoming game against Floyd Central. It was a breezy night and a great one for some action on the football field.

It was a story of two completely different halves for Seymour, going up 22-7 at one point in the first half, turning into a 43-7 scoring run from Floyd Central for the rest of the game, winning 50-29.

Floyd Central secured the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season, the loss dropped Seymour to 1-3, still searching for their first Hoosier Hills Conference win.

Head Coach Tyson Moore spoke on the outcome with the Highlanders on Friday night.

“The second half we were moving the ball on offense and unfortunately had some drives that stalled out,” Moore said.

“I think the biggest thing that hurt us most was getting behind the chains,” Moore said “When it’s and second and third and 20 plus yards, it’s hard to get first downs.”

Floyd Central received the kickoff to open the game, returning the kick to the 32-yard line. FC did not have much issue moving the ball on the first drive, until Seymour showed some resiliency inside the 10.

Highlanders QB Jack Mull hit Isaac Kaiser for an easy five-yard touchdown pass to kickstart the game.

Aaron Holt then returned the kickoff to the 46-yard line to kickoff the Owls drive. It was three and out for Seymour after three unsuccessful rushing attempts, leading to a punt.

Alexxander Milliken grounded the kick at the Floyd Central 4-yard line, meaning a 96-yard drive needed to happen for the Highlanders to score.

After some rushing attempts from Floyd, Mason Nugent met Robertson at the 13-yard line to force the Highlanders to punt, setting themselves up at the Highlander 39.

Seymour then got the ball, not wasting any time as they scored for the first time in the game. Wide Receiver Jaylan Johnson cooked his defender, hauling in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mikey Wright.

Owls kicker Adrian Medina added the extra point to tie the game at 7. Johnson then made the unbelieveable play on the defensive side of the ball, picking off Mull after turning his body at the last second to fool the Highlander QB.

A few minutes into the second quarter was all it took for the Owls to score again, as Wright found Traysean Hawkins on the screen pass, going 18 yards for the touchdown. Hawkins followed his blockers and ended up in the end zone.

After Floyd Central marched down the field to begin the game, Seymour would force the Highlanders to punt once again.

Floyd faked the punt attempt, running Robertson directly up the middle but it would be stopped, inches short of the first down to give the Owls the ball after the measurement from the chain gang.

Seymour then ran the ball down the field on the Highlanders with a heavy mix of Nick Wheeler before Wright faked the Highlander defense with a bootleg scramble, taking the 22-7 lead with 5 minutes left in the first half.

Just a couple minutes later, Floyd Central hit David Pennington for a 57-yard passing touchdown, making it 22-14.

After the Owls got the ball back, Wright would then be sacked, getting called for intentional grounding to make it 3rd and 29 from their own 22, being forced to punt after the next play.

A short punt directly to Floyd’s sideline put the Highlanders in good position to score before the half. The Highlanders would score and faked the extra point to tie the game at 22 after a passing touchdown from Mull to Nolan Lippert.

The game was tied at 22 a piece at halftime, which is the most points for the Owls in one half this season. The second half was the complete opposite in favor of Floyd Central. After some turnovers, an interception and everything settled, Floyd Central took the 21-point win.

Coach Moore believes you cannot pin the loss on any certain thing.

“Our offense and defense feed off of each other,” Moore said. “I think there was just a breakdown, miscommunications on the coaches side as well. You can’t really pinpoint this loss on any specific thing.”

Floyd changed their defensive scheme at halftime and limited Seymour on the offensive side of the football. The coach spoke about what must change for the Owls to turn this season around.

“We have to get to the second-level in the running game and our offensive line,” Moore said. “I thought our line did a better job tonight, staying on blocks and working through contact. But we still struggled to get to that second level.”

“We must continue to do that if we want to get better, quarterbacks and receivers have to be on the same page,” Moore said. “Tonight, I thought we were off-schedule a little bit in my opinion.”

Seymour hits the road for their next two games, facing Bedford North Lawrence next week, before traveling to Brownstown Central for the Jackson Bowl in two weeks. Both of these games are on the road and will begin at 7 p.m.
