USDA: Record corn, soybean yields expected

Indiana farmers continue to anticipate record high corn and soybean yields this year, according to Nathanial Warenski, the state statistician for the United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Indiana Field Office.

Indiana farmers anticipate harvesting 5.06 million acres of corn, down 250 thousand acres from last year and 5.78 million acres of soybeans, up 300 thousand acres from last year.

As of Sept. 1, farmers anticipate Indiana corn to average 210 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last month’s anticipated yield and up 7 bushels from last year. As of Sept. 1, Indiana corn was 61% dented, thirteen points higher than the 5-year average. Indiana soybean yield is forecasted at 63 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from last month.

As of Sept. 1, 94% of Indiana soybeans were setting pods, four points higher than the 5- year average.

Nationally, corn production for grain is forecast at 15.2 billion bushels, up less than 1% from the previous forecast but down 1% from 2023.

Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 183.6 bushels per harvested acre, up 0.5 bushel from the previous forecast and up 6.3 bushels from last year.

Area harvested for grain is forecast at 82.7 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 4% from the previous year.

Nationally, soybean production for beans is forecast at a record high 4.59 billion bushels, down slightly from the previous forecast but up 10% from 2023. Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average a record high 53.2 bushels per acre, unchanged from the previous forecast but up 2.6 bushels from 2023.

Area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 86.3 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but up 5% from 2023.
