The Seymour volleyball team used aggressive serving to defeat Scottsburg 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium Thursday night.

The Owls went 58-66-6 at the serving line in breaking a five match losing streak. Greer Henry was 16-18-2, and Anna Fish was 8-9-2.

Coach Angie Lucas said. “It was all about our serving. We served very aggressively and kept them out of the system a lot. They have some players that can swing and hit, but we kept them out of system a lot, and when you do that, you’re going to win the match.

“It was a great win for us. We have had a tough couple weeks. Our competition has been really good. I love going to the Avon Tournament because when we go there, I feel we get so much better and it showed tonight, so I’m really proud of our players tonight.”

Lucas said another key was the defense.

“Our defense is always strong. We have Jamie (Bobb), Norah (Campbell), Greer and those kids keep the ball in play a lot. Abby Followell is doing a great job for us in the back row, so defense is our strength. It’s something that we count on.

“We’re working on our net play. It’s a work in progress. We have changed our setter. Anna is running it for us, and she is doing a great job.”

Fish had 31 assists, and Bobb led the team in digs with 19

Seymour was leading 10-8 in the first set before Campbell came up with a kill, Fish tipped a ball over the net for a point and the Warriors made a passing error for a 13-8 advantage.

Scottsburg went on an 8-3 run to tie the match at 16-all.

Seymour came right back with a 7-0 run to lead 23-16. After the visitor scored two points, the Owls scored twice with set point coming on a passing error by Scottsburg.

Seymour trailed 4-1 early in the second set, then turned up the offense for a 14-3 run and a 15-7 lead.

The closest Scottsburg could get after that was 21-16, and Campbell had a kill for set point.

The third set stayed close early with Seymour leading 8-7. The Owls went on a 6-0 run with an attacking error by Scottsburg setting the score 14-7 lead.

A block by Zoe Williams gave the Owls a 19-9 lead, and later Williams had a kill and a block on back-to-back points for a 22-11 lead, and Campbell had a kill for match point.

Campbell had a big night hitting, going 26-26-10.

She said she was pleased with her performance and happy the Owls won.

“I think we had to work together as a team, and we realized that this week, and we did such a good job flowing together and communicating with each-other. It was like a family out there. That was something we were missing on Saturday (at Avon).

“Today we came out with so much energy, and we were mentally prepared for the game. We terminated the ball very well tonight. We did struggle with some passing at points, but we did pick it right back up.”

Campbell also said she felt like the serving was a key. “We had lots of good serves and aces. Strong serving puts them out of their system, which works well for us. We played a very clean game after that.”

The Owls (9-7) will play in the Connersville Invitational on Saturday, and Campbell said in order for the Owls to bring home a title, “We just have to come in with the same mentality as we did tonight.

“There is going to be some good competition there, and I think that is going to be really good for us. We must play a clean game. We’re definitely going to come prepared this weekend.”

Campbell said despite not winning a match last week, it was a good learning experience.

“It was tough last week, but it was really good for us to learn from it, and I think we did. We handled it very well.”

Lucas said, “There are always things to clean up, our blocking. We had a couple big blocks at the end, but we hadn’t touched a ball before that. A lot of that is the fact that we were serving so aggressive that they were not able to set things up.”
