Anyah Carrigan wanted to make sure Emily Terrell picked up her first win as Trinity Lutheran’s girls soccer coach Saturday morning.

Carrigan gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the match, then scored a hat trick in the second half in a 5-1 victory over North Harrison.

This is Terrell’s first season as head coach of the Cougars after serving as an assistant coach the past two seasons.

Terrell said when that goal went in, “it gave us a lot of confidence playing against a really good team. We worked hard in practice all week to get our passing down, and they’re finally doing things we’ve been working on, so I’m really proud of them.”

Trinity’s first shot on goal came at 38:15 left in the first half before Layla Jones had Trinity’s first strike at 36:38.

Harrison had 10 shots in the first half. Trinity attempted five shots before Carrigan scored. The Cougars had four more shots over a 25-minute span after Carrigan’s goal.

Jones worked her way past all the Harrison defenders and was one-on-one with the goalie, but the Trinity senior was denied, and she was also stopped on her rebound attack.

Jones scored at the 1:17 mark to give Trinity a 2-0 lead going into the half.

Carrigan’s goals in the second half came at the 28:58, 13:24 and 6:04 marks.

“I was very excited. It made me very happy,” Carrigan said about her first goal. “Our whole team worked together, and the fact that we had good passes and assists made me very happy too.”

Carrigan said her teammates did a good job of setting her up in the second half.

“I was trying to get open for the people who had the ball. I enjoy being on the team, being part of something bigger than myself.

“The win feels great,” she said and added that she has seven goals for the season.

“We need to keep up our energy. We did a lot of running this week, which is annoying, but it helped,” Carrigan said.

Bailey Reimer had two assists and Addison Garcia had one assist for Trinity.

The visitors finally got on the scoreboard when Sarah Edlin scored at 18:23, but Carrigan scored five minutes later to help Trinity get that three-goal advantage back.

Terrell said, “I couldn’t be prouder of Anyah. As a freshman she comes out and works hard every single day. She’s a great teammate. She’s working to pass to her teammates, she’s taking open shots, and she works hard on what we work on in practice.”

Terrell said it was a total team effort for 80 minutes.

“They finally played to their full potential, and they’re playing their positions like we’ve been practicing. They’re executing what we’re working on in practice, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

“Our defensive energy is what kept us in this game. We had great shots, but working together helped us today. “

Trinity (1-4) will travel to Hauser on Thursday.
