BROWNSTOWN— It was a hard-fought battle on Thursday night between two Mid-Southern Conference foes on the tennis courts. Brownstown Central and Scottsburg went back-and-forth to the end, as the Warriors pulled out a narrow 3-2 win over the Braves.

Brownstown Head Coach Donnie Thomas spoke on the outcome with the conference rival.

“It was one of those matches that coaches and teams have sometimes, Thomas said. “We lost two doubles and three singles pretty quick and won our one doubles match fairly quickly as well. The momentum flipped on the other courts, and we couldn’t win. Sometimes things happen.”

Brownstown No. 1 Smith Hackman lost his first set 6-2, before turning the match around, winning the last two sets 6-1, and 6-3 to secure the win. Scottsburg No. 2 Jace Luttrell defeated Chase Brock, 6-4, 2-6, and 6-2.

“It was good to see Smith play as well as he did and Chase played well too,” Thomas said. “We just weren’t able to get that third and final win to secure the match.”

Warriors No. 3 Jarin Luttrell defeated Brady Davis in the third singles match, 6-2, and 6-1. The Brownstown No. 1 doubles team of Pierson Wheeler and Lane Steward took care of business over Noah Bagwell and Sammy Craig, winning the match, 6-4, and 6-2.

Max Peters and Jace Reaser dropped the second doubles match to Carson Jones and Lane Harris, 6-4, and 6-3.

After a few weeks into the regular season, Brownstown sits at 2-4. Thomas spoke about what the team is doing well at the beginning of the season.

“I feel like we’re competing,” Thomas said. “The guys seemed to compete a lot better against Scottsburg and I want that to continue.

The rivalry is heating up with the creation of a new trophy that will have a red and purple tennis racket for the color of both teams. It also has a tennis ball inside the trophy behind the rackets.

Coach Thomas spoke about what the team must improve on to continue improving.

“Be more like a team, It seems like we don’t pay attention to other matches,” he said. “You like your guys to follow and watch your teammates compete. I think we just need to pull together as a team. It’s an individual sport, but also a team sport as well.”

Brownstown faces Clarksville at home Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The team then faces off with Austin next Thursday for a match with the Eagles.
