Special Olympics athletes square off in cornhole tournament

SHELBYVILLE — For the third year in a row, Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County athletes competed in a cornhole tournament in Shelbyville.

This competition was established three years ago by Special Olympics Indiana Shelby County and has always been held at Morrison Park.

This year’s event drew athletes from Jackson, Shelby, Ripley, Ohio, Dearborn, Fayette and Johnson counties.

Jackson County had four duos win both of their matches.

Derrick Martin and Elijah Noble won 22-4 and 21-5, Dylan Bridges and Autumn Kaplan won 21-0 and 21-3, Tim Ashburn, Jamie Miller won 21-0 and 21-2 and Blake Oathout and A.J. Engel won 21-17 and 25-11.

Five others split their matches.

Dale Hickman and Billy Allman won 21-2 and lost 21-5, Amanda Hamm and Averie Brennan won 21-3 and lost 21-15, Zack Campbell and Alysha Sandlin won 21-19 and lost 23-4, Becky Klosterman and Jenny Freeman lost 21-9 and won 17-6 and Dakota Campbell and Montana Casto lost 24-2 and won 23-17.

Madisyn Freeman and Coltyn Freeman lost both of their matches 21-16 and 21-4.

The Jackson County athletes will continue to practice weekly until the sectional Sept. 15 at Hauser High School in Hope.

Due to the growth in the sport, this is the first year for Special Olympics Indiana to have cornhole sectionals.

The state tournament is set for Sept. 29 at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.
