The Seymour boys’ tennis team opened tis season by hosting Waldron Monday afternoon and the match didn’t come out the way the Owls were hoping.

Waldron swept the singles and went home with a 3-2 win.

Seymour coach PJ Stein said he knew going in that he thought it would be a close mach.

“We knew coming in that it was likely going to be 3-2 or 2-3,” he said. “We didn’t get to play them last year, but we had been following their players, and they’ve got some really good players, and we knew we would have our hands full.

“It’s a tough loss to start the seas, but hopefully we’ll rebound. We’ve got plenty of chances to rebound,” with four more matches this week.

The match came down to No. 2 singles where Seymour’s Carter Stein and Waldron’s Lucas Shaw battled for 2 ½ hours before Shaw won 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Waldron’s Charlie Fischer topped Parker Thompson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Jack Fischer was a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) winner over Braylon Busby at No. 3 singles.

Owls Shun Takeuchi and Joel Stevens beat Cash Young and Jackson Kuhn 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Xavier DuBois and Dane Thompson beat Matt Thomas and Lincoln Fischer 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

“The doubles played well,” Coach Stein said. “When we keep the ball in play good things happen for us. Unforced errors is really what hurt us.

“That’s really what hurt us on our singles matches. We didn’t keep the ball in play, we had too many unforced errors.

“In singles we need to hit more accurate shots, more playing off the opponents’ weaknesses, because we didn’t do a good enough job of capitalizing on our opponents’ weaknesses tonight.”

The Owls went to Bloomington North on Tuesday, and will be home to Providence on Thursday, will travel to Scottsburg on Friday, and will be home to Brownstown Central Saturday starting at 10 a.m
