Owls begin gridiron campaign at Greenwood Friday

Friday marks the beginning of another high school football regular season as the Owls hit the road to face the Greenwood Woodmen at 7 p.m.

The team is coming off their second-straight winning season after a 6-5 record last year. The Owls bring back a lot of experience on the defensive side of the football.

Seymour has a whole different look, however, on offense compared to this past season. The Owls have a new starting quarterback in Mikey Wright and have a brand-new offensive line.

Head Coach Tyson Moore is beginning his fifth season as leader of the football program. Moore spoke about the opposing program in Greenwood.

“Greenwood has been a solid program the last couple of years,” Moore said. “They had a good year last season with several guys playing football at the next level. They are a very disciplined team, and they just make plays.”

The Owls will have to be disciplined on defense and execute their opportunities on offense, Moore said.

“We have to be disciplined against them,” he said. “They have athletes that can make a move here or there and next thing you know, they are in the end zone. We can’t give up second effort plays and give them extra opportunities. If you give them chance after chance, they will make you pay.”

The opening game of the season has not been a friend of the Seymour football team over the years. In fact, Moore is looking for his first week one win since taking over the Owls program. Seymour was defeated by the Woodsmen last season in a thrilling 51-49 game.

Moore wants to see some energy from the team Friday night.

“I want to see us compete and get after it from the opening kick and have a lot of energy,” Moore said. “Since I’ve been here, week 1 has not been good to us.”

“I was impressed after our last scrimmage, I think if we’re able to take the good things from there and bring them into this game and capitalize on our opportunities, we will be in good shape,” he added.

As we move into another season, the coach was asked about his favorite thing about leading the Owls football program.

“I enjoy seeing the growth of these kids,” Moore said. “We’re getting to the point that I’ve seen these kids come up through middle school and now they’re playing for us. The growth these kids and this program have made is amazing.”

Seymour has no shortage of seniors in 2024. They are Ricky Bogard, Jackson Brock, Noah Broughton, Curtis Burke, Devon Jackson, Jaylan Johnson, Max Klapacz, Will Mahoney, Mitchell Mellencamp, Mason Nugent, Cole Simmons, Logan Shelly, Nick Wheeler and Wright.

“This is a fun group of kids, I’m excited for them and hoping to see them get out to a good start,” Moore said. “A lot of these seniors have played three to four years of varsity football. When you look back at our recent success, they might have been underclassmen, but they were vital and a key part to that.

Senior night will be week two during their first home game of the season against Jeffersonville. Coach Moore has high praise for this group of kids.

“This group has fought through a lot of adversity to continue bettering themselves,” he said. “They’ve worked hard to better this program and leaving it better when they found it, when they move on.”
