City Engineer Bernie Hauersperger gave the Seymour Board of Public Works and Safety updates on ongoing street construction during a regularly scheduled meeting on July 25 at city hall.

The intersection of Fourth and O’Brien streets will remain closed for a “good part” of August for the construction of a roundabout, Hauersperger said. Ever since the intersection closed in March, traffic has detoured using Burkart Boulevard to North O’Brien Street to Seventh Street to Blish Street to Third Street.

Construction on Community Drive at Second Street near Seymour High School is set to be complete before the new school year starts on Aug. 7, however, Hauersperger noted that the schedule is “real tight.”

“We ran into a utility issue and it’s probably right there at Aug. 6 (Tuesday) that it will reopen,” Hauersperger said.

Earlier in the meeting, board members approved various special requests for the use of the Walnut Street parking lot, the site of the Farmer’s Market. Thanks to board approval, Auntie Anne’s set up shop in the lot from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 30. The board also approved The Rolling Pig Pen’s use of the lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and September 6, 12, 19 and 26.

Also during the meeting, Fire Chief Eric Roll gave a rules and regulations update to the board. Additionally, the board approved several requests for sewer bill adjustments.

The board also approved the closing of Second Street and Chestnut to the railroad for the Mystic Moon Market, which will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on Sept. 21.

The Seymour Board of Public Works and Safety meets every second and fourth Thursday in the council chambers of city hall, 301-309 N. Chestnut Street. Meetings are open to the public and the press.
