Kiddie Day brings smiles to fair

BROWNSTOWN — Laughter, smiles, excited shrieks and love was found throughout the midway for Kiddie Day on Wednesday afternoon at the Jackson County Fair.

Kiddie Day, held from 1 to 5 p.m., allowed children to purchase ride bracelets for $17. The bracelets then allowed the wearer unlimited access to most of the Poor Jacks Amusements rides and attractions.

With the temperature over 80 degrees and a shining sun throughout most of the day, kids and their families eagerly wandered from one ride to the next.

In breaks between rides, families was able to enjoy classic fair foods and refreshments such as ice cream, funnel cakes and lemon shake-ups to wash it all down.

Rhonda Freeman with Medora Christian Church and other members of the congregation spent the afternoon bringing 31 kids and their families to enjoy some carnival fun.

“They just love it,” she said. “They have been talking about this all week.”

After hopping off the carousel with her friend Graison Hendrickson, 7, Kaydaince Henline, 6, said her favorite ride is the Farm Tractors.

“I really like the carousel because I like horses,” Hendrickson said.

Hendrickson’s twin brother, Jackson, 7, said his favorite ride is the Ferris wheel because he likes the colors. Afterwards, he likes to enjoy his favorite sweet treat, which is cotton candy.

Chane Henline, 9, said he also enjoys the Ferris wheel because of how high up he can go.

“You can see everything from up there,” he said.

For Avery Edwards, 9, and Dallas Hackney, 5, cotton candy is the number one sweet treat they enjoy.

“I like how it melts in your mouth and it’s so sweet,” Edwards said.

Ayden Edwards, 12, enjoys the thrill of the Freak Out, where riders sit in a suspended seat secured by over-the-shoulder harnesses as it swings back and forth.

“I like the big rides,” he said.

Afterwards he likes to savor a classic vanilla ice cream cone with his friends.

The crash of bumper cars was nowhere near loud enough to mask the laughter of kids as they crashed into their friends. Ava Rautenkranz, 6, and her aunt Felicia Schneider were all smiles after their turn in the bumper cars.

Rautenkranz sister, Heidi, 10, watched in amusement before heading back to the stables to take care of her animals.

“I really like the Ferris Wheel,” she said. “My favorite sweet treat would have to be a caramel apple with a lemon shake-up.”

Ava agreed with her big sister that caramel apples are a staple when coming to the fair.

Kiddie Day will take place again from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Jackson County Fair, weather permitting.
