Highway 50 crash claims life of Hayden man

A two-vehicle crash on U.S. 50 at County Road 700 West claimed the life of a Hayden man Thursday afternoon, according to Sgt. Thomas Mellencamp with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.

The initial investigation led by county Sgt. Drew Heilers indicates that at 2:06 p.m., a 2015 Toyota van driven by Jerry L. Bridges, 82, for an unknown reason, pulled off the county road and into travel portion of the highway where it was then struck by a concrete truck drive by Travis Carroll of Lovett, according to a news release from Mellencamp who is the department’s public information officer.

As a result of the collision, Bridges was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he later died from his injuries.

U.S. 50 was closed for approximately two hours for crash investigation and cleanup. The investigation remains ongoing and the family has been notified.

Sgt. Heilers was assisted by county Detective Ian McPherson, county officers Kylie Lee and Morgan Gabbard and Sheriff Kenny Freeman along with personnel with Jennings County Central Dispatch, Jennings County Emergency Medical Services, Spencer Township Fire Department, Stat-Flight, Schneck Medical Center and 31 Wrecker.
