The Jackson County Visitor Center recently was recognized by the local chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution for the proper display of both the American and Prisoners of War/Missing in Action flags.

On June 18, Darrell Scifres, president of the David Benton SAR chapter in Brownstown, presented a flag certificate to Arann Banks, the visitor center’s executive director, and Jordan Richart, the center’s public relations manager, for their part in properly displaying both flags outside the visitor center’s office at 100 N. Broadway St., Seymour.

The selection of the visitor center for the recognition was approved by Jim Harvey, chairman of the SAR chapter’ flag committee.

In the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution’s official handbook, Volume V, Individual Medals and Awards, it states the “Flag Certificate, authorized in 1987, is presented to individuals, companies and government agencies that fly the United States flag for patriotic purposes only. It is not to be given to any commercial enterprise that obviously flies it for advertising purposes. A chapter, state or the national society can present it.”

Chapter flag committees and chapter members can present flag certificates to individuals, corporations, businesses, fire departments, police departments, schools, libraries, etc. that properly display the American flag.

The David Benton chapter is one of 14 SAR chapters in Indiana. For information, indianasar.org/.
