Another county athlete made a choice to continue playing sports in college. Trinity Lutheran’s Olivia Cain tore the cover off the softball this season.

The now-graduate hit .390 with 30 hits, three doubles and 19 RBIs and scoring 18 runs for the Cougars. On Tuesday evening, she signed her letter of intent to continue playing softball at Anderson University.

Cain will become a Raven this fall and will major in engineering. She spoke about the chance to play college softball next season.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to actually be able to play,” Cain said. “I have always loved the sport since I was little. To have that dream come true is amazing. It’s not something that’s given to everyone, and sometimes it’s peoples’ dreams, and it’s always been mine.”

Trinity Lutheran Head Coach Herb Gross spoke about the signing.

“Olivia has always wanted to play at the next level, and she has put in the work to do so, and I think she pays immediate dividends to the Anderson program,” Gross said.

The school drew Cain to attend the university, exciting her for some of the technology she will get to use in college.

“It was awesome, I loved it, they had exactly what I was looking for in College Engineering,” Cain said. “The coach is also everything I’ve always wanted in a coach, he’s very calm, and a nice guy. All the teammates are extremely sweet, they have a good program and want to build your faith.”

Cain continued speaking on the subject.

“All the cool things they have in the engineering program,” she said. “All the machines that you get to use to design all your projects, that’s what drew me to the school in the first place.”

Anderson is involved with faith, like Trinity Lutheran. Cain spoke about the easy adjustment, having already attended a Christian school, and being involved with faith throughout her life.

“It will be an easy adjustment in terms of that. I’ve always grew up learning about my faith. Anderson doing that, will help me keep building upon my faith and growing closer.”

Coach Gross is confident in Cain working hard and making an impact for Anderson University.

“Olivia is a hard worker and puts everything into improving her game,” Gross said. “I know that she will put in the work to catch up to the speed of college ball and will find success.”

Cain was named Most Valuable Player at the team banquet for her senior season.

The Ravens went 9-27 during the last season, picking up five of their wins at home, ending their season with two straight victories over the Defiance Yellow Jackets to finish the year.

Cain will be the 17th player on the roster from Indiana next season, while five players aren’t from the Hoosier State, four of them are from Illinois or Ohio.

Anderson is in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and are considered Division III to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
