The weather forecast cooperated for the 43rd annual Dr. Bud Charity Golf Tournament Wednesday at Shadowood Golf Course.

Although it was supposed to rain, especially in the afternoon, 30 four-member teams played in the morning and another 32-teams teed off in the afternoon.

Dr. Eric Fish, president, and CEO of Schneck Medical Center welcomed the afternoon golfers to the event and gave them a brief history of the event. After the last cart made its way to a tee Fish said, “We gave out $35,000 in scholarships to nursing students this year,” he said.

“Since the start of this, we’ve given nearly $800,000 in scholarships to the nursing students. It’s been great support from the community, especially our donors and sponsors. Every year has been a well-attended event.”

“To effectively meet our region’s, need for nursing professionals, we must ensure nursing students graduate on time and enter the workforce where their experience is greatly needed. I thank all the supporters of the Dr. Bud Golf Tournament for supporting nurses and the vital role they play in our hospitals.”

One of the corporate sponsors is Jackson County Bank.

“We’re a corporate supporter and certainly support the hospital and the foundation, and the work of the foundation as well,” Marvin Veatch, president, and CEO of Jackson County Bank said. “That is what ‘community’ is about, and certainly Schneck is a big part of this community just as Jackson County Bank.”

He spoke on how it’s an important part of the community.

“We’re happy to support this, and have, and it’s a great asset for the entire community,” he said. ” Health care is such an important element of any community, and for Schneck and their staff, this is certainly an asset for this community. Nothing happens without the high-quality healthcare and nursing, and the nursing program is really the backbone of what they do.”

Veatch and Jeff Nolting played in the afternoon.

“The main thing is it goes for a good cause,” said Nolting, who has played in the event several times.” Hospital means so much to the community, and the nurses are an important part of that, and they just do a great job. So, I think more than anything the long history of supporting the community, and supporting the hospital and the nurses that work there is important.”

Nolting says he plays a lot of golf at Shadowood.

“They got a great turnout, good support so it’s wonderful,” he said.

Bob VonDielingen said he enjoyed playing in the morning.

“It was a beautiful morning,” he said.

VonDielingen has played in the event several times over the years.

“It is a wonderful event and they do such a good job,” he said.” We struggled a little and I think we were eight under. It is a great event, and it is fun to have the camaraderie and friendship with all the people that play. I still play quite a bit of golf at Shadowood.”

The event supports nursing students from Jackson, Jennings, Scott, and Washington counties.

“We have a fairly large applicant pool, and it’s always nice to see the kids,” Fish said. “We have a lot of individuals on our staff who have been recipients of these scholarships over the years, so that’s always fun to see as well.”
