Golf has been a part of Micah Sheffer’s life for quite some time, beginning when he was a little kid.

The Brownstown athlete just finished his sophomore season, leading the Braves to a Washington Regional finishing in sixth place, along with a second-place finish in the Bloomington Sectional.

Sheffer averaged 34.8 strokes per 9 holes and 73.9 for 18. He was also selected to the Mid-Southern Conference team with his performance of 73 at Wooded View Golf Course, which was the second lowest of any golfer in the event.

For these achievements, Sheffer has been chosen as the Tribune Boys’ Golfer of The Year. He spoke about his sophomore season with Brownstown.

“I think we had a very successful season. We all got better from last year to this year. We won conference which is one of our top goals,” Sheffer said. “We made it out of sectionals which is also one of our top goals.”

He considered it a good season, making it as close as any team in school history to state. “Then we were close to making it to state as a team which has never been done before in Brownstown history,” he said. “So, I feel we had a very successful season.”

Micah’s father brought him on the course growing up, sparking the love for the sport.

“Ever since I was little my dad had always taken me to the golf course. I grew up living on it,” Sheffer said. “I would play with dad constantly.”

He also enjoys playing with his friends as he has grown up.

“Now that I’ve gotten older, I play with my friends and I love it,” Sheffer said. “I enjoy playing with my friends. I also love to travel and play new courses. My favorite thing about golf though is the nerves and competition.”

Sheffer carded a 70 at Cascades Golf Course in the Bloomington Sectional, before shooting a 75 in the regional at Country Oaks Golf Course in Washington. He spoke about his favorite feeling on a golf course.

“My favorite feeling during a golf round is when you have a 4- or 5-foot putt on the last hole and you hit it to shoot under par,” he said.

As he progresses into an upper-class student, he will suit up on the gridiron this fall and will play on the basketball court this winter before next spring.

He spoke about how he will improve his golf game going forward.

“I feel if I want to take my game to the next level, I have to become a better ball striker,” Sheffer said. “I have to be more consistent with my mid and long irons. I feel if I can make that happen, I will shoot more consistent scores under par.”

Sheffer has two more seasons, hoping to bring the Braves to the state finals in one of them.
