Trustees receive update on school projects

BROWNSTOWN — Construction projects at all three Brownstown Central Community School Corp. school buildings have been making progress with the absence of students for summer break.

Assistant Superintendent Jade Peters gave an update on the work during a school board meeting on June 11 at the administration building.

“We have a lot of things going on around the corporation,” he said.

Peters said the restroom project at the middle school was underway along with projects to construct two new streets to the elementary school. The new streets, which lead to a new parking lot on the north side of the building, will provide additional access to the school which has one entrance and exit at this time.

“They have a huge pile of dirt down there if you haven’t been by check that out,” he said.

He said footers for the new gymnasium at the elementary schools should be dug sometime in the coming day.

“And the HVAC is a warzone inside the elementary school right night,” Peter said of a project to replace that system.

“Everything’s torn down,” he said. “It’s a mess right now.”

A project at the high school baseball field also is in the works and should begin sometime in late summer or early fall, Peters said.

Superintendent Tim Taylor gave an update on meal prices.

He said because the corporation is carrying a positive cash lunch/cafeteria fund, there will be no increase in meal prices for 2024-25.

“Meal prices remain status quo,” Taylor said. Lunch prices are high school, $2.90; middle school $2.75; elementary school, $2.60; reduced lunch 40 cents; adult lunch price, $4.60; student breakfast, $1.40; adult breakfast $2.50; and reduced breakfast, free.

Outgoing board members, Scott Shade, who represented the town of Brownstown, and Dave Martin, who held Pershing Township’s seat, were recognized and received plaques. Shade and Martin each spent 11 years as board members.

Trustees also approved administrator salaries and benefits for 2024-25 that remain unchanged. Taylor said those would be reviewed for potential changes once a contract for teachers and a salary/benefit package has been put in place for classified staff later in the year.

The resignations/terminations for the following were approved by trustees: Breanna Arnold, middle school special education teacher; Kaylee Bowling, eighth-grade girls basketball coach; Brahlie Brooks, middle school night cleaning; Bailey Davis, high school special education aide; Nancy Goben, elementary school cafeteria; Elizabeth Griffus, fifth-grade girls basketball coach; Michael Knapp, high school special education aide; Miranda Perry, high school assistant cheer coach; Sondra Short, corporation treasurer; Macy Stalcup, elementary instructional aide (28 hours); and Sara Welden, high school education teacher and academic track social studies coach.
