Ruth Virginia (Gillaspy) Gossman, age 103, of Bloomington and formerly of Brownstown, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the home of her son.

Ruth graduated in 1943 from Indiana University with a degree in Home Economics. She was a teacher with the school systems at North Madison, Columbus, and Decatur Township in Indianapolis for more than 20 years. She taught Home Economics, Special Education, and Kindergarten. Ruth was a Cub Scout leader and a 4-H leader, and she belonged to the Extension Homemakers Clubs in Jefferson County, Bartholomew County, and Marion County.

She loved her family beyond measure, including her nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, crocheting, and studying family genealogy.

Born on October 25, 1920, in Crothersville, she was the daughter of John Haskell and Etta Baringer Gillaspy, both of whom preceded her in death. On June 5, 1948, in Crothersville, she married Leon Gossman, and he preceded her in death on July 17, 2016. She loved traveling with her late husband, and sons, and she enjoyed spending the winters in Florida after they retired.

Survivors include two sons: Edward L. (Diana) Gossman of Indianapolis and James A. Gossman of Bloomington; a special friend, Andra Alvis; three nieces: Brenda Labie, Charlene Taylor, and Carol King; and two nephews: Kenneth Gillaspy and Bob Gillaspy.

Ruth was also preceded in death by her three younger brothers: Robert Dale Gillaspy, Harlan Gillaspy, and John Gillaspy, who she loved dearly.

Funeral services for Ruth Virginia Gossman will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.

Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.

Memorials may be given to the Decatur Township, Marion County 4-H program through Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
