Concerns raised about speeding drivers

A Seymour resident raised concerns about motorists speeding around Shields Park during the city Board of Public Works and Safety on Thursday morning.

“There’s a lot of fast cars going up and down Broadway by the park, and I myself have seen two near misses,” Manny Hunter said. “I was a firefighter and EMT for 20 something years in New York and I have seen some nasty stuff — little kids getting hit by cars … There was a speed limit sign put up that I guess is supposed to track and flash and let people know. Nobody cares.”

Hunter said she has noticed many younger people in souped up cars who “think they’re showing off for the entire park,” speeding around the block during baseball games in the evening.

“They will literally just go around the block speeding and come back,” Hunter said. “It’s making me very nervous, and I feel like nothing’s being done … I have called the police multiple times when these kids were going around the block and nobody showed up.”

Police Chief Greg O’Brien suggested the city put down temporary rubber speed bumps to help curb the issue. He said the city does not like to install speed bumps made of asphalt, concrete or metal because they make it impossible to run snowplows in the winter.

“One last question — tack strips, are those illegal?” Hunter joked.

Earlier in the meeting, the board approved a request by Chick-fil-A to use the Walnut Street parking lot for a food truck from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 28 and July 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, and 5 to 7 p.m. July 8 and 12. The board also approved The Rolling Pig Pin’s request to use the parking lot from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 20, 24, 27 and July 11, 18, 25.

Additionally, the board agreed to provide police assistance for the 17th annual Midnight Run 5K on July 12 (pending on event organizers devising a new route for the course as a result of ongoing construction on Second Street) and the 11th annual Boys and Girls Club Youth Triathlon on June 29.

Three mobile food vehicle operating licenses were approved by the board as well: Tio Migue Tacos y Más, GrillO’s Authentic Mexican Food and The Rolling Pig Pin (pending on the owner paying the application fee).

Board meetings are scheduled for the 11 a.m. in the second and fourth Thursdays of each month in the George Green Council Chambers at city hall, 301-309 N. Chestnut St. Meetings are open to the public and the press.

The board has postponed their next meeting by one day, from June 27 to June 28.
