Seymour’s Siefker headlines all-county girls’ track team

Because of running a lot of miles over the past several years, Vivienne Siefker has had a lot of success in both track and cross country at Seymour high School

This spring she won the 1600 and 3200 and was on the 4×800 relay team that placed first in the Seymour Sectional.

She helped the Lady Owls win their fourth straight sectional trophy.

Siefker also placed first in the 3200 in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet.

At the Bloomington North Regional, Siefker placed seventh in the 3200 and eighth in the 1600, and she was a member of the 4×800 relay that placed eighth.

Siefker said she had a lot of fun being with her teammates this spring.

“Just being with the girls on the team. They followed through from cross country onto track, so we’ve had a strong, close group. Coach Spencer (Sunbury) always makes it great, and maintenance runs gets me through.”

For all the blue ribbons she received this spring Siefker has been named the Tribune’s County girls track and field athlete of the year.

Siefker was also named The Tribune’s County athlete of the year in cross country after she qualified for the state finals. She was on the 4×800 relay that qualified for state ion track her sophomore year.

Tuesday night she received the outstanding distance runner award at the team’s awards program held at the high school.

Siefker said after the program she was going to do some running.

“I run six days a week,” she said. “I get Friday’s off. We do time instead of mileage. My first few days of the week I do 30 minutes and then in the middle of the week I run 35, and Saturdays are normally my long runs, so I will do 45 to 55 minutes.”

She said, “I have always liked running. It is something I’ve been good at. I’m going to miss my Seymour family. It’s a group that I’ve gained people and I’ve lost people, but even when they went on to college I still keep in touch.

“I think we’ve built a good foundation here.”

She enjoys running year-round. “I always tell people when I’m in cross country season I like track, and when I’m in track season I like cross country more, just the opposite.”

Earlier this spring she signed a letter of intent to run at Marian College in Indianapolis.

Siefker said, “I’ve been doing some practices for them. I think there will be a couple days in the summer when we meet up as an actual team and do a run. I move on August 12. After that we’ll do camps together and get to know the team more.”

Some college cross country runs are 5K and some are 6K. “We run both, it just depends on the race,” Siefker said.
