Annual picnic at summer resort

The Seymour council of the United Commercial Travelers Association is among the first in this city to usher in the summer, with the third annual picnic which the organization is staging today at Peter’s Cabin seven and one-half miles north of Seymour. About fifteen automobiles decorated and loaded to the guards with members and baskets well filled with “eats” left the city at 10:30 o’clock for the picnic grounds.

Cicadas due this year

A noisy and unwelcome visitor is expected in Jackson and some 36 other Indiana counties this month.

This is the year for brood XIV of the periodical cicada (often erroneously called the 17-year locust) to turn up in great numbers in southwestern Indiana according to Donald L. Schuder, Purdue extension entomologist.

The high-pitched shrill “singing” will be most bothersome to those living near wooded areas.

Vets reflect on the flag

With Flag Day set for Monday, area residents will have an opportunity to show their support for Old Glory by participating in a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at One Chamber Square in downtown Seymour.

The combined units of the Seymour Elks Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans will conduct the ceremony.

The American flag has its own meaning to a lot of different people, as well as its own history.

“It’s a symbol of my country,” says Russell Byrkett, commander of VFW Post 1925 in Seymour.
