BROWNSTOWN — Fresh off their second-place team finish and qualifying for the regional, Brownstown Central held their annual golf program and awards banquet on Monday evening.

The Braves celebrated clinching their fourth regional boys’ golf berth in school history. They are not done yet, as they compete tomorrow morning at Country Oaks Golf Course in Washington at 8:30 a.m.

“They’ve been great to coach, and it’s been a lot of fun out there,” Head Coach Brent Hattabaugh said. “We’re ready to go out and compete on Thursday.”

Brownstown has a list of achievements from this season. Tying the school record with a 9-hole team score of 147 against Scottsburg and Brown County in a home meet at Hickory Hills Golf Course.

The Braves had almost half of the Mid-Southern Conference representatives with four of the nine selections. Micah Sheffer, Caiden Gwin, Smith Hackman, and Matthew Reedy were all selected to the MSC team.

At this point, their record sits at 93-34, finishing second in the sectional and winning the Mid-Southern Conference Tournament.

The growth of the Brownstown boys’ golf program is something Coach Hattabaugh is thankful for.

“We had 15 golfers this year and over the last several years, we’ve continued to grow in numbers and talent,” he said. “I am thankful that more students are interested in playing this as a sport. They can also continue playing after high school, I believe the competition has made everyone better one through fifteen.”

The Brownstown coach spoke about his two seniors in Gwin, and Cole Brelage.

“Every year it’s bittersweet for the seniors to leave the team,” Hattabaugh said. “They have improved tremendously improved from their freshman year. They are not vocal leaders, but they show underclassmen that ‘hard work pays off’.”

“It’s been a pleasure to coach these guys and I wish them well on their next chapter of life and hope to see them on the golf course.”

Hattabaugh was also chosen as the Mid-Southern Conference Golf Coach of The Year.

Cole Brelage, Caden Waskom, and Collin Downing received their first varsity letter for golf.

The JV finished with a record of 23-35, but played against varsity competition in varsity tournaments all-season long.
