A 28-year-old man faces four felony charges in an incident Friday evening which he attempted to kidnap a girl on Seymour’s east side, police report.

Raul Faustino Ortega of Seymour faces Level 5 felony charges of attempted kidnapping and robbery along with Level 6 felony charges of theft and battery on a child under the age of 14, according to a news release from Lt. C.J. Foster with Seymour Police Department.

Foster said the investigation that led to Ortega’s arrest started at about 6:05 p.m. Friday when officers responded to the 1200 block of East Sycamore Road after receiving information a male had grabbed a female and possibly attempted to remove her from that area.

When officers arrived at the scene, the mother of the girl said a male came around the corner and attempted to get her daughter to come to him. When the mother said no, the suspect grabbed the girl. The mother told police she was able to pull her daughter away from the male, who grabbed the girl’s sunglasses and fled the area on foot.

A suspect was developed based on the description given by witnesses, Foster said, and on Tuesday, detectives located Ortega and interviewed him. As a result of the investigation, Ortega was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 12:31 p.m. Tuesday. He was being held without bond pending his initial hearing in Jackson Circuit Court.
