Thumbs up for June 1

The ultimate sacrifice

Thumbs up to the members of American Legion Post 89 and Veterans for Foreign Wars Post 1925, both of Seymour, for conducting a Memorial Day service on Monday at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour and for trying to conduct another one Sunday at the Jackson County Courthouse in Brownstown despite storms moving through the area at the time. A related thumbs up to all the volunteers who placed flags on veterans’ graves across the county, the state and country for Memorial Day. Those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country should be remembered every day.

Moving on

Thumbs up to the 550 students from the four public and two parochial high schools in Jackson County who recently graduated or will graduate Sunday. The total includes 12 each from Medora and Sandy Creek high schools, 30 from Crothersville High School, 33 more from Trinity Lutheran High School, 114 from Brownstown Central High School and 343 from Seymour High School, whose commencement is set for Sunday.

Semistate bound

Thumbs up to the members of the Brownstown Central softball team who won the school’s first sectional since 2010 — and fifth overall — by defeating Hauser 3-1 on May 23 at Milan. The Braves then went on to win the school’s first regional title on Tuesday by defeating Providence 7-0 at Clarksville. The Braves, who are on an eight-game winning streak, will meet the Eastern Hancock Royals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Forest Park.

Sectional sensations

Trinity Lutheran’s baseball team also receives a thumbs up for winning the school’s fourth softball sectional title by defeating Shawe Memorial 8-2 on Monday at Madison. The Cougars will play South Central at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Mitchell Regional. Trinity’s lone regional title softball came in 2023.

State finalists

Thumbs up to Seymour High School’s Jaylan Johnson, the Owls’ 4×100 and 4×400 relay team, and Brownstown Central’s Isaiah Engle who all qualified for the boys state track and field meet to be held at Indiana University, Bloomington. Engle qualified in the 300 hurdles, while Johnson qualified in the 400, and he will be joined by Kylan Ellerbe, Devon Jackson and Ty Tormoehlen in the 4×400 relay, and Mason Nugent, Kyle Hileman, Jesse Mellencamp and Jackson will run the 4×100 relay.
