Two Jackson County residents were arrested on multiple felony charges after a traffic stop that led to the discovery of fentanyl Sunday evening in Seymour.
Luke Newkirk, 33, and Ryanne Snodgrass, 36, both of Seymour, face charges of possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle, possession of cocaine or narcotic drug and obstruction of justice.
Newkirk also faces charges of dealing methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and habitual traffic violator while Snodgrass faces an additional charge of possession of methamphetamine. Both were being held without bond pending their initial hearings.
According to news release from Seymour Police Department, the arrest of the two occurred after officers received information that a maroon Mazda may be in the area of Ninth and Ewing streets, and the driver was possibly under the influence of illicit substances in addition to being a habitual traffic violator.
Once in the area, officers observed a vehicle matching the description and developed probable cause to conduct the traffic stop, police reported.
Upon being stopped, patrolmen noted Newkirk attempted to switch seats with the passenger, later identified at Snodgrass, police reported.
Officers positively identified Newkirk and confirmed his HTV driving status.
While attempting to take Newkirk into custody, a brief struggle took place during which Newkirk attempted to ditch a plastic bag containing a substance which later tested positive for Fentanyl, police said.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located approximately 2.5 ounces (70+ grams) of methamphetamine, scales and paraphernalia.
Additionally, officers said Snodgrass had attempted to hide a syringe and paraphernalia during the transport to the jail.
Newkirk was booked into the Jackson County Jail at Brownstown at 9:38 p.m. Sunday while Snodgrass was booked in at 10:09 p.m. Sunday.
All parties herein depicted or described are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law, police said.
