Local Special Olympics athletes compete in area track meet

Running, jumping and throwing took place Saturday at Eastern High School in New Pekin.

The school was the site of the Special Olympics Indiana Area 2 track and field meet. County programs represented were Bartholomew-Brown-Jennings, Clark-Floyd, Jackson and Washington.

Jackson County had 21 athletes competing. Here are their results.

Nevaeh Ackeret: First in 400-meter dash, first in running long jump, first in 200-meter dash

Billy Allman: Second in standing long jump, first in shot put

Josh Beals: Second in 50-meter dash, first in mini javelin throw

Averie Brennan: First in 50-meter dash, first in 800-meter walk, second in softball throw

Dylan Bridges: Second in shot put, second in running long jump, second in 100-meter dash

Dakota Campbell: Second in 50-meter dash, first in mini javelin throw, first in shot put

Zack Campbell: Second in mini javelin throw, first in shot put, second in 100-meter dash

A.J. Engel: First in 400-meter dash, first in running long jump, first in 800-meter run

Jenny Freeman: Third in tennis ball throw, first in 25-meter unassisted walk, second in 50-meter unassisted walk

Amanda Hamm: Second in 25-meter unassisted walk, first in 50-meter unassisted walk, second in softball throw

Austin Hernandez: Second in 400-meter walk, first in mini javelin throw, first in shot put

Haley Hoener: First in mini javelin throw, first in shot put, first in 100-meter dash

Becky Klosterman: First in tennis ball throw, first in 25-meter unassisted walk, second in 50-meter unassisted walk

James Knight: First in 50-meter dash, first in softball throw

Owen Law: First in mini javelin throw, second in shot put, second in 200-meter dash

Derrick Martin: First in 400-meter walk, second in 800-meter walk, first in softball throw

David Perrin: Second in 50-meter unassisted walk

Chaz Rothrock: First in mini javelin throw, first in running long jump, second in 200-meter dash

Alysha Sandlin: Second in 400-meter walk, first in 800-meter walk, first in softball throw

Rob Smith: First in tennis ball throw, first in 50-meter unassisted walk

Darrell Stevens: Third in 400-meter walk, third in standing long jump, second in mini javelin throw

The athletes received gold medals for first place, silver medals for second place and bronze medals for third place.

By competing in this meet, athletes qualify for the Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games, set for June 7 to 9 in Terre Haute.

The state program’s largest annual competition will bring together more than 2,100 athletes and Unified partners from across the state. The event, celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, will include bocce, bowling, cycling, powerlifting, swimming, track and field and volleyball.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and up.
