Retired teachers meet at Seymour

Jackson County Retired Teachers Association met May 16 at the First United Methodist Church in Seymour.

The tables were decorated with pink begonias in silver pots with twine trim provided by Marcia Culbreth, and given as door prizes.

President Bonnie Koontz welcomed the 32 members and guests and announced this was the 60th anniversary since this sssociation was organized in 1964. She led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary’s minutes and treasurer’s report were approved.

Cheryl Corning, Area 10 Director, talked about the 13th check being approved by the recent legislature due to efforts of the members contacting their representatives and senators. She, also, reminded the group of the Active Teachers Grants, two of which are awarded in District 10.

A moment of silence was observed for recently deceased member, Marvina Lewis.

Koontz announced the officers for 2024-2025 will be Bonnie Koontz, president, Connie Gerth, secretary, Becky Davis, treasurer, Terrye Davidson, membership, Emily Adams, community service, and Leon Seitz, legislature.

Koontz led the invocation, and lunch was served by the ladies of the church.

Following lunch, Tonya Couch, Edward Jones Financial Advisor, gave a presentation “Outsmart the Scammers.” She gave each member a folder with a booklet “You have the power to outsmart the scammers” and information sheets describing the various scam possibilities.

She told of a recent study that revealed one in 10 senior citizens are scammed, but only one in 24 report the scam.

The next meeting will be Sept. 19.
