GREENFIELD — The Owls traveled north over an hour on Saturday to compete in the Cougar Softball Tournament at Greenfield-Central High School.

Seymour faced off with Greenfield in game 1, before facing off with Frankton in the second matchup. The Owls lost to Greenfield, 13-3, before losing to the Eagles 14-4.

Against Greenfield, Seymour fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, before scoring some runs in the middle innings. The Cougars did not let up, downing the Owls 13-3 in five innings of play. Head Coach Emily Bobb spoke on the outcome with Greenfield-Central.

“A combination of Greenfield-Central hitting the ball and having us making mistakes defensively was the difference in the game,” she said.

Seymour committed six errors against the Cougars, and four more against Frankton.

In the second game against the Eagles, a 9-run second inning catapulted Frankton over Seymour, winning 14-4 in five innings.

The first inning started off with home runs for each team. Claire Duncan hit a homer for Frankton, before Mackenzie Bryson hit one for the Owls in the bottom of the inning.

“The Frankton game was a similar story, we made some defensive mistakes but did make improvements offensively,” Bobb said. “They are both strong programs.”

Delaney Warren led the team in hits against Frankton with two of them. Phoebe Underwood, Zoe Williams, Diem Castetter, and Macie Rawls recorded the others for Seymour.

The team is currently 5-15 and faces Franklin in their next game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Bobb spoke on her favorite part about coaching the 2023-24 Seymour softball team.

“My favorite part about coaching this year’s team is getting the chance to watch them learn and grow through adversity,” Bobb said. “Things haven’t always gone our way, but they’re staying the course and sticking to what we believe in.”

Seymour has two seniors in Avery Stewart and Alexa Dannettelle, who are finishing their high school careers this spring. Coach Bobb spoke about what these seniors have meant to the program.

“Our two seniors have made a great impact on our program,” Bobb said. “They have bought into the culture and expectations we are trying to build. It has been an honor cheering them on throughout their high school careers.”

The Owls compete in the Class 4A 15 Sectional beginning on Monday, May. 20th at 7:30 p.m.

Seymour will face off with New Albany at New Albany High School at 7:30 p.m. If the Owls can secure a win, they’ll face Jeffersonville the next day at 7:30 p.m.
